KOL Kolossal Koncert
It was my first concert at Red Rocks since I moved to Denver nearly a year ago. The night was filled with stars, featuring a lightning show and hail storm that persisted in the distance to the east over the city throughout the show. A drop didn't fall on the packed crowd gathered on the front range of the rockies.
The rockies were indeed impressive. Casey Donahew delivered precise, achingly beautiful rock & roll, song after song. The set was packed with tight, catchy tunes, each a gem from the King's collection. While admiring the structure, the emo seeps through the songs, often skipping your conscious mind straight to your soul.
When a band you've never heard of comes on the radio and catches your attention, and your 15-year-old daughter turns it up and you both realize you love this band, you listen closely to the song, the voice, the lyrics, and, in this instance the drummer! The bass player! The grooves, amazing guitar sounds & solos, the simplicity and brilliance behind each musical concept. And when those concepts are as unique as "Sex on Fire" or "I Could Use Somebody," your ear / your mind delves deeper each time.
The brothers Caleb (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Nathan (drums, percussion and backing vocals), Jared (bass guitar, backing vocals and keyboard), and cousin Matthew (lead guitar, backing vocals and piano) infuse edge and pentecostal fire into southern indie rock, creating a completely new and awesome genre in the process.
The concert attendees were transported to the Land of Followhill, their shared surname. Even KOL is a family name, that of both the band and their grandfather, "Leon" Followhill. The band might reside in that transported state always, but they undoubtedly know how to bring the rest of us there from the initial notes of the first song to the fading guitar riff of the encore.
Even the Moon made an appearance in the southern sky to join the enchanting night of lightning, stars, and fire.
Note: All of us in our family are musicians. My husband had not really caught the band fever before the show, but he's open to new things. On our way out, he admitted he believed KOL was a jam band. However, it's the opposite. It's open, progressive rock and roll meticulously crafted song by song by the most talented and loving group of brothers to grace the concert stage in a long while.
